oulos Hyderabad residents were left stunned yesterday morning after a young woman reportedly jumped off a multi-story building in Musheerabad. The tragic incident allegedly occurred due to ongoing harassment in dowry.
The victim, Sowjanya, aged 28, had married K. Shabarish, a local from Bholakpur, November 2024. Post-marriage, she had been living with her husband and his family in Musheerabad.
Police have since opened an investigation into the suicide, alleging that the woman had been subjected to continuous harassment from her in-laws, demanding additional dowry despite receiving Rs 5 lakh in cash and 22 tolas of gold at the time of marriage. Reports suggest the abuse was both psychological and physical.
On Thursday evening, distraught over the ongoing harassment, the woman leapt from a high-rise building. She was transferred to Gandhi Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Friday.
In light of the incident, the Musheerabad police have registered a case and are conducting further inquiries.
"Dowry is a severe and pervasive issue in Indian society, and victims often suffer in silence, fearing social stigma and further abuse. We hope the police will conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice," said a local resident Pradesh.
Another life lost, another family devastated, and another woman sacrificed on the altar of greed and dowry demands.
