Are college campuses safe for students? Not quite. Here's why.
Women in Hyderabad are no stranger to harassment. From nasty stares to creepy whistles and disgusting comments, many women have experienced harrowing incidents both within and surrounding college campuses. Despite recurring incidents and complaints, authorities have not taken sufficient action, leaving students feeling scared and vulnerable.
A recent survey caught up with students to understand their experiences. While many were too scared to disclose their identities or the names of their colleges, some women felt bold enough to share their experiences.
One student from NIFT highlighted the presence of perverts just outside the campus gates. Another student from NALSAR University of Law shared that although NALSAR has a liberal campus where girls can feel safe, sexual harassment incidents have still occurred. A student from the University of Hyderabad talked about the freedom the campus provides but also the everyday fear of sexual harassment that plagues women worldwide. A student from TISS, Hyderabad, mentioned that while students enjoy greater freedom, they have struggled with sexual harassment and abuse both within and outside the campus.
An student from Villa Marie spoke about feeling safe and at home on her campus, which is located in a densely populated area. These women's testimonies paint a picture of fear and frustration and highlight the need for stricter measures to ensure the safety of women on college campuses.
The message is clear: college and university campuses are not as safe for students as they should be.
Unfortunately, these women's experiences are not unique. Harassment and sexual assault are global women's issues that need to be addressed.
Authorities need to be stricter and take more significant action to ensure the safety of women on college campuses.
It is essential to create conversations and awareness around these incidents to continue pushing for safer campuses for all students.
