Former UFC fighter and WWE wrestler Ben Askren opened up about his recent lung transplant and the arduous path that led him to this point, describing the experience as the most difficult challenge of his life.

The 40-year-old athlete underwent the procedure at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver after developing a dangerous staph infection that caused pneumonia so severe it permanently damaged his lungs.

In a recent interview, Askren detailed the terrifying experience, stating that he had died four times during the ordeal. He explained how he had contracted the infection during a routine dental procedure and spent just under two months in the hospital fighting for his life.

When recalling the darkest moments of his journey, Askren commented, "I died four times. I had a priest give me the last rites. My wife was told I had less than a 10% chance of survival."

However, despite the odds against him, Askren is now focused on appreciating each day and providing hope to others in similar situations.

He is grateful for the second chance at life and is eager to return to coaching and spending time with his family.

"All I want to do is breathe on my own for the next 24 hours," Askren emphasized.

"Then, I'd like to get out of the hospital and start coaching my son's wrestling team. I want to help my daughter pursue her dreams. I want to be able to go on an adventure with my wife."
