A Nepalese official has warned that terrorist groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad may use the Nepal route to target India due to the country's geopolitical position and lack of counter-terrorism capabilities, emphasizing how these attacks will negatively affect Nepal as well.
Last week, a seminar titled "Impact of Terrorism on Nepal and Neighborhood" held discussions emphasizing how terror attacks across the border in India often have spillover effects on Nepal, which undermines regional peace and stability. The conveners of the seminar noted that the Himalayas do not act as an obstacle to international terrorism and that terrorist groups could penetrate the rugged mountain terrain.
Previously, the Indian government has also expressed similar concerns, pointing out the sheer number of terrorists operating in Nepal, especially in the border regions, and the lack of effective counter-terrorism mechanisms there. Indian officials have especially highlighted the danger of fake currency printed by terrorists and used for trafficking drugs and arms into India.
Participants at the seminar marked the need for a regional consensus and global cooperation to combat the threat of terrorism. They advocated for Nepal to play an active role in promoting peace and stability in the region and positively contribute to preventing and countering-terrorism.
