In August 2024, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced an ambitious plan to expand Chennai Airport, with a projected budget of around ₹2,500 crore. This expansion aims to significantly increase the airport's capacity from its current 22 million passengers per year to over 35 million by 2026. The project includes the construction of a new terminal, additional taxiways, and renovations of existing infrastructure to enhance the passenger experience and accommodate the growing travel demand.

As Chennai Airport continues to solidify its status as one of India's busiest airports, handling both domestic and international traffic, the need for expansion has become critical. The increase in airlines and flights serving Chennai has put considerable strain on the airport's facilities, particularly during peak travel seasons.
