Digital fraud, cyber arrest, and online drug cases are on the rise in India.

A recent complaint in Hyderabad highlights the devastating impact of cyber fraud, entailing losses of several lakhs. Jyothi Reddy, a resident of Mithilanagar, Gajularamaram, reported that cybercriminals defrauded her of 3.4 lakh by keeping her in a "digital arrest" for a day, using threats of legal action in a fabricated case of MDMA drugs.

The criminals first contacted Reddy via phone, claiming to be from the excise department. They informed her that parcels registered under her name contained illegal items, including MDMA drugs and passports. Reddy was further instructed to transfer 1.9 lakh, with promises of refunding the amount once her innocence was established. The following day, the perpetrators demanded an additional 1.5 lakh, misleadingly termed a "security deposit" to clear her name from the case.

The Cyberabad cyber crime police have registered a complaint and launched an investigation into the matter. This incident underscores the importance of recognizing and combating cyber fraud. Perpetrators of such crimes are sophisticated in their methods and approach, leaving victims not only devastated financially but also mentally and emotionally. This demands due attention from authorities, and awareness and preparedness among potential victims.
