Hyderabad Traffic Police Aim to Reduce Violations with New "Automatic Number Plate Recognition" System
Hyderabad is set to become the first Indian city to implement a new road safety measure: the "Automatic Number Plate Recognition" (ANPR) system. By the end of September, the city's traffic police will roll out this technology at 350 intersections across the city. Currently, they are testing it at 12 locations.
The system works by capturing images of vehicles' license plates and using automatic character recognition to identify potential violations. The technology checks the database for traffic violations such as running red lights, exceeding speed limits, not wearing helmets or seat belts, and other prohibited behaviors. After detecting violations, the system automatically generates e-challans for offenders.
So far, the results have been promising. In one day, the technology detected over 40,000 violations, including motorists going the wrong way or using their phones while driving.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar stated that the new system will identify registration numbers accurately, generate challans by identifying violations, and be integrated into the existing Intelligent Traffic Management System. He believes the technology will empower them to enforce the traffic laws more effectively and improve road safety.
Road safety advocate Dheerendra Samineni welcomed the use of technology to detect violators. However, he also emphasized the need to educate motorists about road safety to avoid inconveniencing others.
