Marijuana Addiction Overshadowing Hyderabad Schools

Hyderabad authorities are fighting a rising drug problem in schools, as marijuana addiction takes hold of students, with shocking details emerging of tenth-grade students smoking marijuana regularly. The situation has grown concerning enough that schools are requesting government intervention. The trend spans multiple schools across Hyderabad, with some even taking disciplinary action against addicts, and others asking parents to supervise their children more carefully. An associated NGO called Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA) urged the government to take preventative measures immediately after it submitted a report to the Education Department.

The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (T-NAB) has formulated a two-step approach to tackle the problem, by raising awareness through seminars and short films, and by arresting the suppliers who target children.

One official commented, "We are working to eradicate drug use in schools through a two-step approach. We will conduct awareness seminars and screen short films to educate students. Simultaneously, we will track down and arrest suppliers who are targeting schoolchildren."

Unfortunately, such measures are needed in a growing list of Indian schools, where a lack of supervision and societal pressures can negatively affect students.

This problem is a small part of a worrying trend of rising drug abuse among young people in India as exposure to drugs increases through social media and the trendiness of "getting high."
