Cyberabad Records Sharp Rise in Cyber Crimes, Hyderabad Witnessing Jump in Property Scams

According to recent reports, the tri-commissionerate, covering Cyberabad, Hyderabad, and Rachakonda, witnessed a startling 40% spike in crime rates in 2024. Cyberabad, the IT hub of the city, experienced the most overall and cyber crimes, while Hyderabad saw a notable increase in property crimes. However, Rachakonda witnessed a decline in crime against women, exception made of a 17% jump in rape cases.

The annual reports by the three police commissioners showed that Cyberabad recorded a 64.88% increase in overall crime cases, the highest of the three commissionerates. Cyber crimes soared by 122%, property offences rose by 61%, criminal trespass by 38.2%, economic offences by 38%, not-fatal and non-injury road accidents by 36%, and dowry harassment cases increased by 30%.

The report also highlighted that cyber crimes were a significant contributor to the rise in reported cases across all three commissionerates. Cyberabad emerged as the hub for such crimes, recording a staggering 122% increase in cyber crime cases from 5,361 in 2023 to 11,914 in 2024. Furthermore, digital arrest frauds witnessed an astounding 882.35% surge, resulting in losses amounting to 80.57 crore.

The tri-commissionerate saw a collective loss of INR 1259 crore to cyber criminals across 20,414 cases in 2024. Rachakonda reported a 74% increase in cybercrime cases, with 4,458 incidents reported compared to 2,562 in 2023, amounting to losses of over INR 170 crore. In Hyderabad, 4,042 cybercrime cases were reported, a 47% rise from the 2,735 cases in 2023, with losses totaling INR 296 crore.

The focus of the police in 2024 was on cracking down on narcotics and drug suppliers. Cyberabad led with 421 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, a 51% increase from 278 cases in 2023. Police made 954 arrests and seized 2,714.77 kg contraband worth INR 24.92 crore. Hyderabad recorded 322 drug-related cases, with seizures worth INR 88 crore, while Rachakonda reported 521 arrests and 88.25 crore seized narcotics.

The number of crime cases against women across the commissionerates almost remained the same. Hyderabad witnessed a slight increase of 2.3% from 2,424 in 2023 to 2,482 in 2024. Rachakonda and Cyberabad recorded a fall of 9% and 2% respectively. Dowry harassment cases grew by 30% in Cyberabad, with 1,343 cases in 2024 compared to 1,030 in 2023. In Rachakonda, dowry deaths increased by 13%, from 16 to 18. Overall, Cyberabad recorded the maximum number of crimes across all categories.
