Indian singer booked after drug-fueled birthday party turns ugly

Musician Mangli was on cloud nine as she entered colleague and friend Aalap Raju's birthday party on the outskirts of Chennai. But the festivities took a bitter turn after midnight, with the upbeat mood giving way to nauseous hallucinations and frayed tempers.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Chennai, Attendees at the celebration held in a farmhouse early Sunday morning accused singer Mangli, whose real name is Sruthy, of making them ingest drugs.

She was booked under sections 294 (obscene act) and 294 (b) (uttering words) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 85 of the City Police Act, which pertains to obscenity and intentionally distributing or attempting to distribute drugs.

After consuming the drugs allegedly provided by the singer, some attendees exited the venue to get some air but became nauseous. They then accused Sruthy of slipping drugs into their drinks.

Sruthy apologized and said that she had been given bad vibes by a few people at the party, who had asked her to spike only specific people's drinks while assuring her it was all just friendly fun. She claimed that she had not expected the attendees to then go and smoke cigarettes and become nauseous.

The police added that they seized electronic gadgets from the singer and her friend, fellow musician Aalap Raju, to check for evidence of drug usage.

This incident once again highlights the urgent need for substantive action on the part of authorities to curb drug abuse and to educate young people about the dangers and tragic consequences of drug misuse.
