In a bid to enhance the safety of women passengers, the Telangana State Road Transport Authority (RTA) has decided to install vehicle location tracking devices (VLTDs) and panic buttons in approximately two lakh private buses, cabs, taxis, and national permit vehicles operating in the city. This ruling will be applicable to vehicles travelling within Hyderabad and those plying in other states.
This initiative is a response to several cases of sexual violence against women who were victims onboard private buses in recent years. In a statement, Transport Commissioner C Ramesh said, "These panic buttons will be linked directly to the police control room and our centre for immediate response during emergencies." He added, "These safety measures will be mandatory for all transport vehicles." In addition to the panic buttons, the VLTDs will help monitor vehicle movement and enable a swift response in emergencies.
RTA is currently seeking financial assistance from both the state and central governments to fund this project. This initiative is among the many taken by the authority in recent years to ensure women feel safe while using public transport in the city.
