title: Novel Drug Delivery Technique Announced, Showing Promise for Lung Diseases

Among lung diseases, pulmonary aspergillosis, cystic fibrosis, and asthma are just a few that impact many people's daily lives. Researchers from the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune have developed a unique drug delivery technique that may benefit those suffering from these conditions.

This strategy involves using polymeric nanoparticles, which are a cutting-edge approach to drug delivery. The ARI researchers loaded the nanoparticles with Nikkomycin, a chitin synthesis inhibitor produced by the bacterial species Streptomyces.

The way this works is vital since human cells lack chitin, an essential component of the fungal cell wall. This means that antifungal medications can selectively target these cells. The team's nanoformulation was also observed to have no cytotoxic or hemolytic effects, showing it to be a safe and promising alternative for inhalation therapy for pulmonary aspergillosis.

This is excellent news for those suffering from lung issues, and the team behind the study is upbeat about further partnerships to commercialize the antifungal nanoformulations. This would increase their accessibility and efficacy on a broader scale.

The study was led by PhD candidate Kamal Mayattu and scientist Dr. Vandana Ghormade and was published in the journal Zeitschrift fur Naturforschung C.
