Global instability leading to increased synthetic drugs production

Explore how ongoing conflicts contribute to increased synthetic drug production and drug consumption.

The release of the World Drug Report 2025 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reveals a concerning connection between global instability and the drug problem. The report highlights how conflicts and instability serve as favorable environments for the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs.

Since the Russia-Ukraine war has disrupted traditional routes for heroin and cocaine, organized criminal groups have shifted their focus to expanding the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs. Ukraine has emerged as a key source of illicitly manufactured methadone, a synthetic opioid with highly abusive properties.

Furthermore, the report emphasizes the role of organized criminal groups taking advantage of global crises and targeting vulnerable populations. It is important to note that the problem extends beyond the conflict regions, with around 316 million people worldwide using drugs other than alcohol and tobacco, which is a significant percentage of the population (6%) aged 15 to 64.

The report also highlights the increasing use of amphetamines and record-high seizures of amphetamine-type stimulants, particularly methamphetamine, showcasing the spread of trafficking in these drugs to new markets. Sadly, India is also facing a severe problem with a growing number of cases of narcotics consumption, especially among young people.

This crisis also affects India, as changes in trafficking patterns are expected due to the Israel-Iran conflict, which could impact the heroin trade. These realities highlight the importance of initiatives like the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, a Central government initiative, and state campaigns to combat drug abuse and strive for a drug-free nation. The disturbing connections between global instability and the drug problem emphasize the need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address these complex issues.
