Police Image Needs Revamping

Speaking at a passing-out parade of new constables in Karimnagar, Kamalasan Reddy, the Director General of Drugs Control Administration, called for a new image of the police as a whole. Reddy urged police officers to exhibit exemplary conduct and professionalism, to erase the negative perceptions that many have of the police.

Reddy addressed the 1,351 constables who had just completed nine months of rigorous training, and who were celebrating their achievement at two police training centers in Karimnagar. Senior police officials were in attendance, including Vijay Kumar, Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, who also spoke at the ceremony.

Reddy explained that many members of the public hold negative views of the police, but that 80% of people who have had direct interactions with officers hold positive opinions. He attributed this to the fact that those who have had negative experiences with the police typically have had no personal contact with officers, and have never been to a police station.

He praised the Telangana Police Academy for the training the new constables had received, and encouraged those constables to remain alert, improve their skills continuously, and maintain their fitness levels. He also highlighted that constables trained for the AR (Armed Reserve) branch could later transition to civil duties if required.

Reddy urged the new constables to lead by example, telling them that they had the opportunity to shape public opinion of the police, reminding them that "you are the ambassadors of the police department".

Vijay Kumar spoke of the challenges faced by the police, including Naxalism, terrorism, cybercrime, and drug trafficking. He urged the new constables to serve with integrity and honesty, reminding them that "when you serve with honesty and selflessness, public trust in the police will grow".

The event concluded with awards being distributed to those who had displayed exceptional performance during training.
