Iranian lawmakers are insisting on "firm preconditions" for any new talks with the US, citing perceived bad faith and military ties with Israel. According to MP Ahmad Naderi, Iran wants a fundamental diplomatic shift and needs to establish preconditions before any new talks can begin.
This development comes after the US and Iranian delegations took part in talks in Vienna this week, with both sides agreeing to return to the table three weeks later.
The Iranian delegation, which included diplomats appointed by Iran's hardline president, Ebrahim Raisi, participated in the talks with a clear mandate. According to Naderi, the delegation presented two demands to the US:
Firstly, that the US must fundamentally shift its approach to diplomatic talks, recognising that Iran has the right to enrich uranium, and that this issue is not up for negotiation.
Secondly, that the US must stop supporting terrorist groups like the MEcentire, which conduct attacks against Iranian civilians and infrastructure. The MP expressed disappointment that the US delegation, which consisted largely of Middle East negotiators, failed to provide any new proposals on these two fundamental issues.
This is a clear signal that Iran's lawmakers are prepared to use the negotiation process as a tool to leverage more advantageous terms. With talks scheduled to continue in February, it remains to be seen whether the US will deliver a more robust delegation capable of meeting these demands.
