Rahul Gandhi, through his letter to PM Modi, has escalated the demand for J&K statehood. In his letter, Gandhi cited instances from the past when Modi had promised to restore J&K's statehood and urged him to fulfill those promises by bringing the legislation in the Monsoon Session of Parliament. This development comes after the Supreme Court's decision to defer the hearing of petitions relating to Article 370 and the statehood of J&K.
In the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, the BJP-led government in New Delhi divided the state into two Union territories- J&K and Ladakh. And, a year later, the government announced that J&K would be administratively split into two UTs, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, effective October 31, 2019.
While Ladakh became a UT, the decision to treat J&K differently and not give it the status of a UT has been controversial. The demand for the restoration of the special status of J&K and statehood for the region has been made by all political parties in the past.
Gandhi, in his letter, reminded PM Modi of his promise made on the floor of the Parliament and elsewhere that the statehood of J&K would be restored. He also mentioned the promises made in the BJP's 2014 election manifesto, which said that Article 370 would be respected and J&K would be allowed to have its state flag.
The letter comes just a day after the Supreme Court deferred the hearing of petitions relating to Article 370 and the statehood of J&K, with the top court saying that the petitions will be heard in the last week of August.
It remains to be seen how the government will respond to Gandhi's plea and if any concrete action will be taken to restore J&K's statehood.
