Nuwanidu Fernando's Hundred Secures Draw For Sri Lanka A Against Australia A

Young Sri Lankan all-rounder Nuwanidu Fernando's resilient unbeaten 104-run knock secured a draw for Sri Lanka A against Australia A in the second four-day game in Darwin.

The 22-year-old, who made his debut in the first match of the series in Brisbane, steered his side's dwindling innings with a fine century in the second innings, as Sri Lanka A finished at 322-9 when stumps were drawn for the last time in the match. Having conceded a 158-run first innings lead to the home side, the tourists were struggling at 186-7 when Fernando arrived at the crease. The all-rounder patiently negotiated the bowling attack, initially in a partnering effort with Chamika Gunasekara, and then with Kalana Perera en route to his second century in first class cricket.

The right-handed batter struck 14 fours and one six in his knock, dealing mostly in boundaries at one point, as he and Perera took the Australians out of the equation, with the home side left to bowl out Sri Lanka A within the remaining 11 overs of the match.

The drawn result currently puts Australia A ahead in the four-match series 1-0, with the third game set to get underway later this week.

Fernando, who picked up three wickets in the match, including a crucial burst of 3-34 in the home side's second innings, proved his all-round worth to the side over the course of the match and will be a player to watch in the remainder of the tour.
