West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is hanging up his international whites after the second T20I against Australia on Saturday (local time). The experienced Russell, who is 35 years old, has spent the last 15 years being an integral part of the West Indies cricket team throughout all formats of the game.
In a statement released by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on the day of the match, Russell expressed his gratitude towards his teammates, coaches, supporters, and cricket lovers from all over the world. He elaborated on his motivation to shift his focus towards furthering his domestic career, spending more time with his family, and investing in his fitness and well-being.
After representing the West Indies at all levels of competition and becoming a popular figure in T20 leagues around the world, Russell stated that it has finally come time for him to retire from West Indies cricket. He will continue to be a dominant player for Delhi Bulls in the CPL 2022 and for Karachi Kings in the upcoming PSL 2023.
"I would like to thank the CWI, teammates, coaches, selectors, supporters, and cricket lovers from all over the world for their support over the years," Russell said. "It's been my utmost honour to represent the West Indies in cricket, a sport which I genuinely love. Every time I put on the Maroon colour, I always played with pride and gave my best for my teammates, fans, and myself.
"It's never easy to move on, but I feel that the time is right for this next phase of my life. I am grateful to all the coaches and staff at CWI and WI Cricket, who have been instrumental in shaping me into the player and person over the years making me capable of sharing my expertise and knowledge about the game with younger players to empower them to excel as contemporary and future champions.
"I am looking forward to spending quality time with my family, tuning up on my physical and mental health, and approaching life with a renewed focus and positivity."
