DigiLocker, a drive initiated by the Indian government, functions as a secure digital vault for all Indian citizens to store their essential certificates and official papers. The all-time accessible portal allows users to store their documents across a range of categories such as education, employment, and personal.
With approximately 300 million users, DigiLocker is a popular platform for citizens to keep their documents digitally. However, in recent times, there has been uncertainty regarding whether or not it is legal to show driving licenses stored on the DigiLocker app to the police.
The confusion arose after a Bengaluru man, who showed his driving license stored on DigiLocker to the police, was rejected and advised to show the physical copy instead. This incident sparked a flurry of questions and concerns amongst users.
However, amidst this confusion, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has stepped in to clarify the rules. As per the statement, issued June 2023, DigiLocker is a legitimate document to provide proof of driving license to the police.
The statement reads, "The Ministry ... would like to assure that the digitised driving licence stored in DigiLocker is a valid document under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989."
Citizens can confidently provide their driving license from the DigiLocker app to the police, without fear of being fined for not carrying their physical copy.
The Ministry's clarification has effectively simplified the lives of many Indians opts to use the DigiLocker app.
