Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty's disappointing season continued at the Japan Open as they suffered a comprehensive defeat to the Chinese pair of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, a fate they also suffered at the hands of Chinese pairs at the Asian Games and World Championships this year.
The Indian duo, seeded eighth, started well enough, taking the opening game, but soon found themselves trailing 8-16 at one point in the second game, eventually losing the game and the match by the margins 9-22, 14-21. The fixture lasted 44 minutes.
This was Shetty's second consecutive defeat to the Chinese combo, having lost to Wangs Kadama and Zhong Feida at the World Championships in Copenhagen in October.
India's other representation in the men's doubles category, Lakshya Sen, also had a disappointing outing, losing to host country Japan's Kento Momota.
The men's doubles bracket was won by former World No.1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia, who beat their Danish rivals Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in two straight games 21-19, 21-16.
