What happens after filing your ITR? The tax department allows 3 ways to e-verify your returns. Read this to know all about it.
Did you just file your ITR for the first time for the financial year 2024-25? If yes, do not forget the crucial step that comes after filing - e-verifying your returns. This is a mandatory step according to the Income Tax Act, 1961. Not e-verifying your ITR will mean your return filing is incomplete and invalid. Do not worry though, the Income Tax Department (ITD) has made it a little convenient for taxpayers to verify their returns online. Want to know how? Read below for five essential things you should know about e-verifying your ITR.
The ITD allows you to e-verify your returns using any of these methods:
1. Aadhaar OTP: Request an OTP on your registered Aadhaar phone number and confirm receipt on the link sent to your email.
2. Netbanking: Log in to your bank account and generate an EVC (Electronic Verification Code) to e-verify your returns.
3. EVC: Generate an EVC through your Demat account, bank account, or ATM and use it to verify your ITR.
4. ATM: Using your ATM pin, generate an EVC and use it to verify your returns.
5. DSC: If you have a Class 2 DSC (Digital Signature Certificate), you can use it to e-verify your ITR.
You will receive an intimation notice via email after a successful e-verification. You do not need to take any further action or go to a local IT office for acknowledgement. In case the e-verification process is not successful, you can send a physical copy of your ITR to your nearest IT office.
So, ensure you do not miss this important step after filing your ITR next time. Remember, filing on time will help you avoid penalties and late fees.
