Asian Junior Championships: India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty ousted

Rankireddy and Shetty succumbed 22-24, 14-21 to the Chinese duo of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in a fixture that lasted just under 45 minutes. The Indian duo had entered the knockout stage as the fourth seeds, having dispatched Ireland's Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds, 21-11, 21-18, in the quarterfinals. They had also beaten the Malaysian combination of Johan Mosiah and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin in straight games in the last 16.

This was not the first time that Rankireddy and Shetty had fallen to the Chinese combined effort. They had lost to Liang Wei Keng and Zhao Jiayu at the 2017 China Open. The Indians had secured their place in the Junior Championships after winning the Under-19 national championship in Vellore last month. They had beaten Ajneesh Haldankar and Adhvik Verma in the final.

Only two Indian teams remained in the tournament, with the women's doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly progressing to the semifinals and men's singles hopeful Lakshya Sen also in contention. Sen progressed after Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie withdrew from the tournament due to an injury.

The Indian team had a disappointing showing in the Junior Championships in 2017, with the only medal coming from the women's doubles pair of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker, who settled for bronze.
