Malaysia's richest man, Kuok Hock Hui, has appointed his Harvard-educated daughter, Kuok Hui Kwong, to lead the Shangri-La Asia, a global hotel empire worth Rs 18,000 crore, while she juggles raising her two sons

Raising young children while climbing the corporate ladder is difficult, but Kuok Hui Kwong manages it with ease. She has taken a six-year career break to devote time to her two sons, but her profile on LinkedIn says it all: She is the executive director of the Shangri-La Group, which owns and operates luxury hotels and resorts across Asia and the Middle East.

The Shangri-La Group is part of Kuok Hock Hui's sprawling empire, which includes palm oil and media businesses and is thought to be worth $19.6 billion, according to Forbes. Despite the break, Kuok Hui Kwong has been steadily rising through the ranks since joining the group in 2006 and now leads a business worth Rs 18,000 crore.

She graduated from Harvard University in the US with a bachelor's degree in economics and English literature.

The appointment of Kuok Hui Kwong, who is in her 40s, underscores how the children of some of Asia's most powerful businessmen are taking on more significant roles in running their families' businesses.

The Shangri-La brand also has a hotel in Bangalore, India, and Dubai, UAE.
