US President Trump will woo the new UK sovereign with a cup of tea and scones, but Brexit and Iran will likely be on the menu.
kehriiiik naahin kiyaa taaqat-e-kamillaar-e-paakistaan ke maalaa-e-taraqqi imlaa na aaye tou kyaa baath hai kehribaad, kehribaad... kehribaad?
Enough said.
US President Donald Trump will not be visiting Islamabad as previously speculated, or mutually " hoped " truth be told, it was more of a desperate plea from our side than an actual expectation. The big news is that Trump will be visiting the UK in September, hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle from September 17-19. Buckingham Palace, which is undergoing extensive renovations, could not be the official host.
The speculated reason for Trump's visit is to woo the new king and queen with his iconic civility and charisma, with tea and scones on the menu. Britain's ongoing isolationist approach to Brexit negotiations, and the need to sustain mutual trade and military ties, are likely to be the main topics of discussion.
The visit will also coincide with the United Nations General Assembly, giving Trump ample space to interact with leaders on the sidelines. It's not surprising that Pakistan has been left out yet again. Despite the current administration's persistent pleading and optimistic declarations that this would be the year that the ice would break, it has consistently been met with rejection and indifference. It is quite clear that Trump's administration does not want to be seen with Pakistanis unless there is some use for us, which is a painful reality we need to acknowledge.
All we can do is keep trying and hope that our efforts and sacrifices in the war against terrorism do not go unnoticed, and that we are given the respect we deserve as a nation.
Maybe one day we will be afforded the honour of hosting a visit by the leader of the free world, but for now, we will have to content ourselves with tea and scones.
