Axis Bank Q1 results reflect a tough macroeconomic backdrop, with net profit down 4% and gross NPAs rising by 10%. But net interest income saw a marginal increase, suggesting its focus on core operations is paying off. Here's what you need to know.
Mumbai, July 27, 2023 Axis Bank Q1 results were released earlier today, providing an insight into the bank's financial performance during the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023-24. The results reflect the challenging macroeconomic conditions facing India as well as the bank.
This quarter, Axis Bank's net profit fell 4% year on year to Rs 5,806 crore, while its gross non-performing assets (NPAs) increased by 10% to Rs 17,764 crore. These numbers are a reflection of the broader financial services industry in India, which is grappling with high inflation, a rising interest rate environment, and slowing economic growth.
However, there were some encouraging signs in the bank's focus on its core operations. Despite the challenging environment, the bank's net interest income (NII) increased by a marginal amount, suggesting its focus on its core banking operations is paying off.
The results also showed that the bank's provisions and contingencies increased by 42% year on year to Rs 10,508 crore, reflecting the higher provisioning required in the current economic climate.
Commenting on the results, the bank's Managing Director, Amitabh Chaudhry, said, "The results reflect the inherent resilience of our business model and our consistent approach to risk mitigation. We remain focused on further strengthening our franchise and building a strong foundation for long-term growth."
This release comes shortly after the bank's announcement of its partnership with Oracle to accelerate its digital transformation journey with the aim of providing a seamless customer experience through enhanced digital banking capabilities.
The bank remains well-capitalized, with a CET-1 ratio of 12.2% and aims to continue supporting economic growth and weathering the headwinds facing the country's financial sector.
