An American woman has traveled to Pakistan to marry her younger Facebook lover, after fighting against her family and the courts to make it happen. Mindy Rasmussen, a 37-year-old from Illinois, first connected with Sajid Zeb Khan, an Islamic student, on Facebook nearly two years ago when a mutual friend introduced them. They spoke on the phone for the first time on New Year's Eve in 2019, and quickly grew close. Despite a 25-year age gap and a court ruling against their marriage, the couple married in Khan's hometown of Karachi on June 10, 2022.
Rasmussen first traveled to Pakistan in 2019 to meet Khan in person for the first time. Shortly after, she returned to Pakistan in 2020 for the wedding, but her family launched a legal battle to stop her from marrying Khan, with authorities detaining her and threatening her with deportation. Rasmussen describes the first trip as "the trip of a lifetime," saying it was also "filled with much adversity and an enormous challenge."
Despite the challenges, Rasmussen insisted that she wanted to marry Khan, her "true love," and described his personality, loving his "humbleness, kindness, and generosity." After months of struggling with the courts and bureaucracy, Rasmussen and Khan finally got married in a small ceremony in Karachi this June. Rasmussen, who is divorced and has a son, says she is now focusing on getting her son and new husband to the US.
"I am grateful to be in Pakistan right now and I am grateful that I fought for what I wanted and what I believe in. I believe in true love and I believe in second chances," Rasmussen said. While it isn't the ending that Rasmussen's family wanted, they now accept her decision. For his part, Khan says he is focusing on learning English, so he can one day work and live in the US.
