'Sensitive Matter, Govt Providing All Help': MEA On Kerala Nurse Nimisha Priya Case

In more unfortunate news, the Indian government is providing assistance to Kerala-based nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been accused of murder and is currently on death row in Yemen. In a statement to the press, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has deemed the case a "sensitive matter" and assured that all possible help would be provided to Nimisha Priya, working in Yemen since 2014.

Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, has been on death row in Yemen for the alleged murder of her former business partner Talal Abdo Mehdi in 2017. Though Priya has maintained her innocence and claimed that Mehdi had embezzled money from her and abandoned her in a foreign country, she was still sentenced to death by a Yemeni court in April of 2019.

Despite international criticism of the Yemeni government and several appeals made by the Indian government, including several reminders of the absence of mutual extradition recognition with Yemen, no further action has been taken to support Priya. The latest statement from the MEA comes after the Supreme Court of India asked the government to consider Priya's plea for extradition to India, to serve her sentence here.

Though the Indian government has assured help and assistance to Priya, it is unclear what decisions have been made to actually expedite the matter.

We will just have to wait and see.
