Since January 20th, the day of the inauguration of President Joe Biden, 1,563 Indian nationals have been deported from the US, according to statements issued by the Indian authorities. The vast majority arrived back to India on commercial flights, and a small number on charter flights. The Indian authorities have also pointed out that there has been an increase recently in the number of Indians being deported, with around 265 Indians being deported in the past week alone. The deprecation flights of Indian nationals have been a source of tension between the two countries, with the US government accused of using emergency quarantine orders as a pretext to deport illegal immigrants, a claim which the US authorities deny.
The Indian government has confirmed that it will continue to repatriate its nationals from various countries and that it acts in the interests of its citizens to encourage and facilitate the return of illegal immigrants. It is not clear how many of the returnees were asylum seekers or what destinations they hoped to reach in the US.
Many of the Indians deported have been from the state of Telangana and have stated that they were lured to the US by employers who promised them proper jobs and visas. One man named Boina John Boina said that he paid $4,000 to a man in India who offered him a job and visa in the US, but when he arrived, he was forced to work for three months without pay. He was then arrested for not having proper visas and deported shortly after.
Many of the returnees are also reported to be indebted, with figures showing that those who go to the US on tourist visas to work end up paying $15,000 to $20,000 to human traffickers. These debts take years to pay off, forcing many to take out high-interest loans with predatory local lenders.
The issue of irregular immigration from India is likely to be raised when Joe Biden and Narendra Modi meet for their first face-to-face meeting later this month.
