Operation sweeping 2 schools in Delhi, India underway after bomb threats, authorities say. All students and staff accounted for and safe but what led to this string of events?
Today, Delhi Police officials announce they, along with the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and fire department personnel, are currently sweeping two schools in the Delhi region after both received bomb threats this morning. This comes after a string of bomb threats rattled the area over the past four days, bringing the total to 12 since the threats began. "We take these threats very seriously and treat each one as imminent," local police spokesperson Balbir Singh told the media.
The sweeps come after an alert was sounded across the area. Authorities would not disclose the exact schools being swept out of concerns for security and investigation details. "We have decided to enhance security across all schools in Delhi, just in case," Singh added.
This sweeping operation is the second of its kind this year. The last one was just four days ago, where two other Delhi schools also received email bomb threats, and students and staff were evacuated safely. Authorities have not said if they believe the two incidents are related.
"Safety is our top priority," Singh reiterated throughout the press conference. "We will ensure that each student and staff member is safe before we make any moves to reopen the schools and continue our investigation."
More details to come as the story develops.
