Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the latest chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against brother-in-law Robert Vadra, saying it is just a continuation of the "10-year witch hunt." Gandhi alleged that Vadra had been "hounded" by the Union government for the entire time and asserted that the "premeditated vendetta" would not succeed. "As part of a premeditated plan, hatched by the BJP, the ED for the last 4 years, has been attacking Mr. Vadra with false allegations and wild claims," Gandhi said in a statement released by the Congress. "The ED chargesheet at Gurugram is yet another allegation in a long list of charges against Mr. Vadra," the statement added.
Gandhi, the former Congress party chief, has publicly supported Vadra, husband of his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on several occasions. In 2017, he accused the BJP-led government of "making false accusations" against Vadra to distract the public from larger issues. Vadra has been questioned by the ED in relation to a number of contentious land deals he made in 2008. He is being investigated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The BJP has accused Vadra of allegedly purchasing land in Gurgaon at a lower price and then selling it at a much higher price after a rise in property rates in 2010. The ED claims in its chargesheet that Vadra's alleged "unexplained income" of 11.73 crore was used to purchase a London-based property.
In his statement, Gandhi also pointed out the ED's chargesheet against Vadra came on the same day when the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested Khaitib Singh, one of the main accused in the targeted killing of journalist Tarun Sobti alias Tarun Barua.
"That this attempt to hurt Mr. Vadra came on the same day that the Special Cell arrested one of those who killed Mr. Barua, only highlights the malicious intent of those behind this," the statement said.
The statement concluded with Gandhi questioning the BJP-led government's "motives and agenda" behind harassing Vadra.
"The people of India want to know what is the motive behind this unchecked political vendetta? Why is the BJP allowing the government's agencies to be used for political gain?"
