Delhi to conduct cloud seeding trials to combat air pollution

For the first time since 2018, the Delhi government has planned to conduct cloud seeding trials in September this year. The goal is to induce rainfall, improve precipitation, and thereby bring down deadly air pollution levels in the capital.

The trials, earlier planned for early July, were postponed after inputs from meteorological institutions indicated that weather conditions in July were not conducive for effective seeding.

This time, the Delhi Government has written to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to extend the monsoon season by a month, until September 30th, 2022, over Delhi and nine districts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Moreover, the government is also exploring the possibility of inducing artificial snow to curb air pollution. The implementation of the project is currently underway.

This news comes after the Pollution Control Board (PCB) issued an advisory to all stakeholders to ensure that different types of pollution, especially those leading to the generation of PM2.5 and PM10 are minimized during the monsoon season.

With the trial now moving forward in September, it remains to be seen what effect these measures will have on air pollution levels in the capital.

Will this initiative be enough to bring down toxic pollution levels in the capital? Only time will tell. But with air pollution killing thousands every year, these experiments could be a welcome step in the fight for cleaner air.
