It's time to revise those pay expectations. Approximately 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners may have to adjust their expectations a bit, as the rumoured minimum basic pay of Rs 51,000 as per the 8th Pay Commission report may not be true. In reality, it may be a more modest Rs 30,000, according to a report by the Business Standard. The report says that the panel may have taken the significant rise in the minimum wage of casual labourers in the 7th Pay Commission into account, and decided against a steep increase this time.

This is because the government cannot afford a sizeable increase in wages, given its liabilities towards pensioners and a manageable ratio of employable people to the population, the report says. The 7th Pay Commission had increased the monthly base pay from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to submit its report by the end of August.

"The Seventh Pay Commission has already hiked the nominal wage to Rs 18,000 and therefore, the Eighth Pay Commission is not likely to suggest anything substantial, surpassing Rs 30,000. The commission may focus on further improving the dearness allowance and bringing more people under the NPS," a source reportedly said.

The maximum and minimum salary caps are also likely to be revised significantly, the report says. Currently, the maximum salary is scaled at Rs 1.25 lakh per month for central government employees. It is likely to be increased to Rs 2.5 lakh. The minimum salary cap is expected to go up from Rs 18,000 to Rs 21,000, the source said.
