In a sweeping protest against the BJP's NRC exercise in Assam, CM Mamata Banerjee today launched a linguistic movement and drew a bold line to stop the BJP's agenda of "linguistic terror" in Bengal.
Facing a tough battle against the BJP in the upcoming elections, Banerjee executed a strategy to galvanize voters behind the promise that Bengali culture and pride would be protected by her government and threatened the Election Commission with consequences if voters were unfairly removed from the electoral rolls during a special intensive revision underway in Bihar.
The BJP's agenda of "cultural and linguistic terror" has been evident over the past few years as they have relentlessly tried to impose Hindi on people in states where it is not the primary language and enacted the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam that excluded millions of people from the exercise.
Now, Banerjee is promising to defend Bengali culture and stop the BJP's attempts to suppress Bengali pride in Bengal.
"We will not allow the BJP to play dirty politics with the language and culture of Bengal. They are trying to disturb the peace and harmony in the state. We will take strict action against them. If required, we will gherao the EC (Election Commission) office in Kolkata and also launch a gherao of the Raj Bhavan," she said.
Banerjee also dared the EC to strike off genuine voters from the rolls under the garb of the special intensive revision underway in Bihar, which shares a border with Bengal.
"I would like to tell the EC that there is a limit to their dirty politics. If they try to ostracize genuine voters from the electoral rolls in Bengal, we will not tolerate it," she said.
