The demise of Sunjay Kapur, the Indian billionaire, has opened a power struggle within the Kapur family over his Rs 30,000 crore ($4.1 billion) legacy, and his wife, Rani, has approached regulators, alleging a plot to usurp the family business.

Sunjay Kapur, who died at 59 in March this year, left his wife as the executor of his Will and trustee of the Sunjay Kapur Trust, which holds nearly half of Sona Comstar, a USD 4 billion auto component maker which was founded by his father in 1985.

The conflict emerged at the Sona Group's annual general meeting (AGM) on September 27, 2022, where Rani Kapur was unexpectedly ousted as a director and trustee. Subsequently, she has alleged that an "adverse interest" group within the company tried to gain control over the multi-billion-dollar automotive components manufacturer.

In a strong statement, Rani Kapur called out chairman Saravanan Krishna and managing director Dushyant Arya and their attempt to "usurp" the control of the company. "The Chairman and MD, with their vested interests, are trying to take control of the company at the cost of the public shareholders," she said in a statement. "The AGM was just a formality to fulfill the regulatory requirements."

However, Sona Comstar has called Rani Kapur's claims baseless and said the matter is sub-judice as it is already pending before the Delhi High Court. "We have full faith in the judicial system of India, which will give an appropriate judgement," said the company in a statement.

The battle for control has spilled into the open and has shocked the Indian business world, with many eagerly waiting for the outcome. The case has all the elements of an intense drama and, indeed, a power struggle, which will ultimately determine the future of the Kapur legacy and what happens to their vast fortune.
