Welcoming the initiative, Mr. Reddy stated that such a move will improve the aesthetics of the city and also minimize the risk of power outages due to windy conditions.
For months, citizens of Hyderabad have been complaining about intermittent power outages, with officials citing strong winds as the reason for the outage. In a high-level review meeting on Sunday to assess the working of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Telangana Chief Minister (CM) K. Chandrasekhar Rao's deputy Mr. Revanth Reddy issued a set of directions to officials directed at turning Greater Hyderabad into a more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing city.
Mr. Reddy said it was important to prepare an exhaustive action plan to make the city pollution-free and to learn from the efforts of other major cities in India before implementing the plan. He emphasized the importance of preparing a detailed report on the current pollution levels in the city and identifying the factors contributing to it.
The meeting also decided to expedite the ongoing works to replace overhead power cables with underground cables across the Greater Hyderabad limits. Mr. Reddy directed officials to complete the works at the earliest and assured them of all support from the government.
He said that the underground cabling would not only improve the aesthetics of the city but also reduce the frequency of power outages, as the cables would be safer from wind and weather damage under the ground.
"This is a landmark initiative for Hyderabad, and we should work together to ensure every citizen benefits from this," Mr. Reddy said. "The future of Hyderabad residents depends on such sustainable initiatives," he concluded.
The government is yet to announce when the plan will be implemented and completed.
