Karbonn Partners with Japanese Researcher to Develop a Battery with Twice the Power

When Sudhir Hasija, Chairman of Karbonn Mobiles, found his smartphone battery constantly draining, he decided to take action by reaching out to Japan, a hub for cutting-edge technology research. Partnering with a Japanese research contractor, who received nearly $500,000 (Rs 2 crore) for the project, Hasija aims to develop a smartphone battery that is not only twice as powerful but also thinner than anything currently available on the market. This new battery will be exclusive to Karbonn phones, signaling a potential trend in the mobile industry that could be crucial for the survival of budget phone brands.

Though this innovation is likely to increase costs, the growing demand for longer-lasting phone batteries has made it a necessity. Hasija expressed his desire to build stronger hardware design capabilities within Karbonn, citing the development of a new alloy that could match steel's durability while being significantly lighter. Additionally, in response to the fierce competition from Chinese smartphone brands, Hasija acknowledges the challenge faced by Indian brands, which often lack intellectual property to protect their position. As a result, Karbonn currently allocates 3-5% of its revenue to research and development (R&D), with plans to double this investment in the coming year.
