Ever since the U.S. last hosted the world's biggest football extravaganza, the FIFA World Cup, in 1994, the year 2026 has been circled in red in the calendars of American football enthusiasts. And now, reports confirm that the iconic Las Vegas will play host to the highly-anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup draw.
The draws will decide the group stages matchups for the tournament, which will be held across several cities in the U.S. Notably, Edmonton and Toronto will be the two Canadian cities participating in the quadrennial tournament.
The draws will be conducted in a marquee event at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, where iconic music stars like Madonna and Britney Spears have performed.
Las Vegas last played host to the FIFA World Cup draw back in 1994, the last time the country hosted the event. The highly-anticipated tournament will be held between June and July 2026, concluding on July 16, which is the longest World Cup in history.
The tournament will kick off with matches in the host country, where matches will be played in 10 stadiums across nine cities. Among the cities include Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, and New York.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup bids adieu to a tradition that lasted a century, which was hosting the tournament in a single or dual countries or regions. Instead, the 2026 World Cup will mark a new tradition by hosting the games in three different nations for the first time in history.
The United States will become the first nation to host the FIFA World Cup three times, having previously done so in 1930 and 1994.
"It's a testament to the strength of U.S. soccer and the magnetism of the FIFA World Cup," said former U.S. Soccer president, Sunil Gulati, back in 2015 after the United States won the rights to host the 2026 tournament.
"We're eager to build on the momentum of the last two years and look forward to bringing the world's biggest sporting event to America," he added.
American football enthusiasts now eagerly await the hosting announcement for the Las Vegas 2026 FIFA World Cup draw with bated breath.
