Mohammad Azharuddin Against India Vs Pakistan In Asia Cup: 'The Situation Is Bad'

Indian cricket legend Mohammad Azharuddin is the latest voice to express concern about the possibility of an India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup tournament this year. Azharuddin, who enjoyed a stellar Test career with over 9000 runs, warned that the sporting ties between the two nations must not be normalized despite the allure of high-profile cricket clashes.

Speaking to Press Trust of India, the former captain said, "The situation is bad. When India and Pakistan play, the emotion is something different. There's a lot of passion, and emotions are running high on both sides."

Azharuddin, however, spared no blame game or criticism of the Pakistani team, commenting, "I don't think we should mix sports with politics. Sports should be kept away from it. But the fact is that the situation is bad, and we can't deny that."

The comments come after the February 14th terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam district, which killed at least 11 Indian soldiers in one of the deadliest attacks in the region in recent years.

Despite ongoing tensions between the two nations, cricket boards on both sides have expressed an interest in playing this year. The Asia Cup, which will be held in Dubai, will likely be the first opportunity for the nations to compete head-to-head since the Indian men's team secured a dominant victory in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Whether or not the political winds will calm enough to allow this rivalry to continue is something only time will tell.
