French multinational Schneider Electric SE has agreed to acquire the remaining stake in its Indian joint venture (JV) with Temasek for 5.5 billion ($6.1 billion), a move that will give the company full ownership of one of India's leading automation and industrial software providers.

The Paris-based firm said in a statement that it has agreed to buy Singapore's state investment firm Temasek's 51% stake in Schneider Electric India Pvt Ltd (SEIPL), bringing its holding in the JV to 100%. The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, will give Schneider Electric ownership of a firm that turned over revenue of 660 million ($709 million) in the year to March 31, 2022, and has diversified across several sectors, including banking, utilities, steel, infrastructure, and automotive.

Schneider Electric emphasized that full ownership of SEIPL will enhance the company's agility and decision-making speed in India, one of the world's fastest-growing economies, and help it to capitalize on the expected surge in demand for digitalization and sustainable energy technologies.

This move by Schneider Electric is the latest in a series of strategic acquisitions and partnerships aimed at strengthening the company's global presence and market share in the sustainable energy market.

The deal comes as Western companies are increasingly looking to India's burgeoning middle class and its increasing appetite for technology and consumption as a driver of growth.

The acquisition is part of Schneider's strategy to pursue inorganic growth opportunities and boost its footprint in Asia. The company has been actively looking to acquire companies that will help it to expand its sustainable energy and digital operations.

It remains to be seen whether Schneider Electric will continue to operate SEIPL as a standalone business or whether it will integrate it into its existing operations in India.
