AP to Build Waste-to-Energy Plants in Nellore and Kakinada

The Andhra Pradesh government will embark on a new project to establish waste-to-energy generation plants in Nellore and Kakinada. The move is part of the state's initiative to address the challenges of processing solid waste and to improve the waste management system.

The Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Ponguru Narayana, recently unveiled the government's plans to invite tenders for the construction of the two waste-to-energy plants. The locations of the plants will be strategically selected within the districts of Nellore and Kakinada. Moreover, the government is contemplating the possibility of establishing a third plant in the Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool region.

Currently, Andhra Pradesh produces 6,890 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, of which only 31% is processed at existing waste-to-energy plants in Guntur and Visakhapatnam. The new plants will significantly enhance the state's capacity for waste treatment. Once completed, the two facilities will process 52% of the daily waste generated by local bodies.

Previously, the TD-led alliance government had outlined plans to construct 13 waste management plants in all of the state's 13 districts. The minister criticized the previous YSRC government for failing to build a single waste management plant, resulting in a significant legacy waste buildup of 85 lakh metric tonnes across dumping yards in the state.

The government has already cleared 45 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste and aims to remove the remaining 40 lakh metric tonnes by October 2, 2025.

Ultimately, the government's ambitious project, once successfully implemented, could serve as a benchmark for effective waste management practices in other states across India.
