Eight persons were trampled to death and dozens more injured in a stampede at a political rally in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district on Wednesday night, police and local officials said. The deceased included two children. The tragedy occurred when a mob ran amok during the dispersal of the rally organized by the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) at Kandukuru town, about 40 kilometers from the district headquarters.

The ruling YSR Congress party and the TDP exchanged accusations over the tragedy, triggering a political storm. Several YSRC leaders, including ministers blamed it on former chief minister Naidu, for the tragedy, saying his craze for publicity claimed lives of eight innocents. They said it was Naidu's penchant for publicity that caused the tragedy.

TDP President Chandrababu Naidu however, said it was the responsibility of the local police to take precautionary measures. Stating that the criticism by certain leaders against his meeting at Kandukuru was not correct, he said several meetings of leaders of various political parties were held in the past at the exact place where he addressed the meeting on Wednesday.
