Andhra Pradesh is set to welcome major investment from Reliance Power, headed by Anil Ambani, worth Rs 250bn ($3.1bn) in renewable energy projects. The planned projects will be situated on 2,600 acres of land near Krishnapatnam in the Nellore district and will include three large-scale manufacturing units, with a rollout plan spanning several phases. The site was chosen for its proximity to the beach, availability of raw materials, and ease of access to a nearby port for transportation. The land was originally allotted 16 years ago by the Andhra Pradesh government for a thermal power project, but progress on the site stalled due to advancements in technology.
This new development is expected to bring about a revival of the unused land and serve the state's ambitious green energy goals. It will also generate around 6000 jobs. The subsidiary of Reliance Power, Reliance NU Suntech, is also planning to invest Rs 10bn ($135m) in a 930 MW solar power plant and 1860 MWh battery storage facility in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. This will be the largest solar and battery storage facility in Asia at a single location.
Anil Ambani has shown a keen interest in the land, making several visits to Andhra Pradesh to find suitable locations for the projects. With this latest investment plan, he is swiftly moving forward in the renewable energy space, notably diverting from the troubled telecom and telecommunications businesses that have faced significant headwinds.
