Vijayawada: Stuck in a festive traffic jam

With the festive season rolling in, states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are witnessing an unprecedented influx of vehicles on the roads, heading home for the Sankranti festival. The National Highway near Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, has been particularly affected, with the traffic situation expected to worsen in the coming days.

A representative image by the Telangana police, tweeted on January 6th, shows a traffic jam on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway. The photograph depicts hundreds of vehicles lined up at Panthangi and Korlaphad toll plazas, with the situation expected to grow critical over the next two days.

The police have attempted to alleviate the problem by designating alternative routes to avoid a complete shutdown of vehicular traffic. Of the 16 toll gates on the highway, 10 have been allocated for vehicles heading towards Vijayawada from Hyderabad, while 6 have been reserved for those traveling in the opposite direction.

Despite these efforts, the highways and byways in the region are expected to remain heavily congested until the festive rush subsides. With families returning to their hometowns to celebrate Sankranti, the coming weeks will be a test of the traffic management strategies of the local authorities.
