Nellore citizens and public representatives protest against the NHAI's delay in erecting a much-needed Vehicular Underpass at Chintareddypalem Junction, near Medicover Hospital on NH-16. The junction serves as the main entry/exit point for Nellore city from NH-16 and remains a major traffic bottleneck with 9 fatalities and 70 injuries in the last 5 years. The NH-16 stretch experiences heavy traffic, and villagers face hardships without a safe crossing point. The demand has intensified with MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy submitting a representation to roads minister Nitin Gadkari for immediate revival, and NHAI has begun preparing a DPR.
Curiously, the NHAI withdrew the tender floated on Jan 7, 2022, and revised the cost, excluding the underpass. Despite MLA Kotamreddy Sreedhar Reddy and Prabhakar Reddy's efforts, the proposal was ignored before being brought to Gadkari's notice. The project will soon be a reality, with NHAI preparing the DPR.
The larger project, worth 116.41 crore, floated three years ago, included an underpass at Golagamudi Junction, a service road at Sundaraiah Colony, and a flyover at Nellore T Junction near Ayyappa Temple.
