The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won big in Civic Body polls but faced tensions in Tirupati over allegations of vote fraud. The YSRCP boycotted the polls, alleging their members were kidnapped to prevent voting. The polling for the Deputy Mayor post was even postponed due to a lack of quorum.
The TDP secured key positions, including Deputy Mayors in Eluru and Nellore Municipal Corporations, as well as Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons in several municipalities. The YSRCP has a stronger presence in ULBs but failed to secure victories despite several corporators and councillors switching allegiances.
Tensions arose as the election for the Deputy Mayor position in Tirupati was postponed due to a lack of quorum, with only 22 out of 50 members present. The YSRCP alleged that coalition leaders had confined their corporators in hotels against their will to disrupt the voting process.
Following the results, Tahseen was elected as the Deputy Mayor of Nellore with the support of the TDP. In Hindupur, TDP took control of the municipality following the resignation of YSRCP Chairperson Indraja. TDP candidates DE Ramesh Kumar, Eratapalli Shivakumar Reddy, and Patan Nasreen were respectively elected Chairperson and Vice-Chairpersons in Buchireddypalem, Nuzvid, and Piduguralla municipalities.
Postponed polls continued on Tuesday. Eluru Municipal Corporation unanimously elected Pappu Umamaheswara Rao and Vandanala Durgabhavani as Deputy Mayors.
The election is supervised by District Joint Collector and Presiding Officer P Dhatri Reddy, with no opposing nominations.
Following the results, YSRCP corporators, Mayor R Sireesha, and MP Dr M Gurumoorthy boycotted the elections and threatened legal action against their members if they were not released.
The election process was conducted under tight security, with Section 144 imposed in the town to ensure peace.
Overall, the TDP celebrated a successful sweep of key positions in the Urban Local Body elections, although tensions and allegations of vote fraud marred the process in Tirupati.
