Sanitation Workers' Strike Ends Amid Negotiations

Sanitation workers in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, have called off their 14-day strike after local Minister Ponguru Narayana and Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy intervened in the dispute. Negotiations were held between the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the leaders of the Municipal Workers and Employees Union, during which the Minister promised to cancel the contract system and offer the existing employees the pilot project instead of outsourcing it to a third party.

The State government had previously initiated a pilot project to outsource sanitation works across three civic bodies in the district. Despite warnings from the Communist Party of India (CPI, M) that outsourcing would lead to job insecurity for workers, the NMC, as well as the municipalities of Kavali and Gudur, called for tenders to outsource sanitation works on an experimental basis.

However, after discussions with the Minister, it was agreed that the tenders would be canceled and workers would be involved in developing the project to make the ninth ward a model ward. The union agreed that no additional manpower was required for the pilot project in the ninth ward, with the NMC pledging to provide the necessary machinery and materials to efficiently conduct the sanitation works.

The final modalities will be finalized by the end of the week during discussions with the Minister, informed NMC Commissioner Y.O. Nandan.
