NELLORE: Despite shifting loyalties to various political parties, powerful families have retained their stronghold and influence in the Nellore district for decades. The upcoming elections will put the heirs of these influential families to the test once more, particularly from the Anam, Mekapati, Nedurumalli, Nallapureddy, and Magunta families. In the current political scene, leaders from the Reddy and Kapu (Balija) communities are prominent contestants in the district's political arena. The Reddy community has been involved in the district's politics for more than 20 years and has solidified its influence in the area. There are several other powerful families involved in politics, like the Magunta family.
The political legacy of the Magunta family stretches back several generations. Among them, Magunta Sreenivasa Reddy, brother of Subbarami Reddy, won the Ongole Lok Sabha constituency in 2004 and 2009. After the state's bifurcation, he left the Congress to join the TDP and was eventually elected an MLC. In 2019, he switched to the YSRC and won the Ongole MP seat.
Another such family is the Nedurumalli family, where Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy, a Congress leader, served as the state's chief minister from 1990 to 1992. He was later elected as an MP from Bapatla, Narasaraopeta, and Visakhapatnam. His son, Ramkumar Reddy, initially loyal to the BJP, later shifted to the YSRC, for which he is the incumbent Bapatla Lok Sabha constituency in-charge.
The Nallapureddy family has also been involved in politics for generations. A prominent leader from the family, N Chandrasekhar Reddy, served as the ZP chairperson and represented the Venkatagiri constituency. His brother, Nallapureddy Srinivasulu Reddy, served as the Kovur MLA. The legacy continues with Srinivasulus son, N Prasanna Kumar Reddy, who also served as Kovur MLA but on a TDP ticket. He later shifted to the YSRC and won from the same segment.
Another family that has dominated politics for decades is the Mekapati family. Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy was elected as the Udayagiri MLA in 1985. He later represented different Lok Sabha constituencies, including Ongole in 1989, Narasaraopeta in 1998, and Nellore in 2009. Notably, he was elected Nellore MP during the 2012 by-elections.
His son, Goutham Reddy, carried the family's political legacy forward when he became an MLA from the Atmakur constituency in 2014 and 2019. He also served as the minister for industries, commerce, and information technology. After Goutham's untimely demise, his brother, Vikram Reddy, stepped in and was elected from Atmakur in the by-polls.
Thus, the political landscape of Nellore district is still largely shaped by prominent political families, who have managed to maintain their influence and support from the local populace, spanning across generations and different political parties.
Whether these political dynasties can maintain their grip on the region and remain influential in the evolving politics of the state remains to be seen.
With the next election, they will once again be in the spotlight.
Only time will tell whether the old guard will continue to wield power or if new leaders will emerge to challenge them.
This will be an interesting dynamic to watch during the upcoming elections.
