As Cyclone Fengal hit the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, heavy rains triggered flash flood alerts in Nellore, Chittoor, and Kadapa districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of further rainfall in the region and issued a yellow alert for Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra, and Yanam, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Tirupati and Nellore districts experienced disruptions to normal life, with educational institutions being declared closed and flights into the region being cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.
Continuing rainfall has also caused concern about the potential for rising water levels in the Somasila reservoir and the Penna River.
To mitigate potential damage, officials have been urged to take appropriate precautions, monitor the situation in real-time, and ensure timely action is taken.
Control rooms have been set up at the district and mandal levels in affected areas to promptly respond to emergencies.
Officials have also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to be cautious when crossing flooded areas.
The energy department has also been advised to gear up to face any repercussions caused by the cyclone.
