Chepala Pulusu, Nellore's famous fish curry, is losing its flavor

The famous Chepala Pulusu, a dish synonymous with Nellore's culinary identity, is witnessing a decline in both availability and flavor. This signature dish is traditionally crafted from sweet-water Korameenu (Red Snapper) sourced from the Pennar river delta. However, changing climatic conditions have impacted the natural breeding grounds of these fish, leading to fears of extinction.

The problem is exacerbated by the invasion of other species like catfish and jellyfish, which feed on ingenious fish like Korrameenu. Farm-bred Korameenu are lacking the natural flavor of their wild counterparts, and the skyrocketing prices of Korameenu, retailing between Rs 350 and Rs 400 per kilogram, are making it increasingly unaffordable for the average diner.

The decline in demand and quality is attributed to two critical factors: the changing climatic conditions, which have impacted the natural breeding grounds of the Korameenu, and the presence of invasive species that feed on them. Additionally, the growing pollution in canals and agricultural water sources is also endangering their survival.

Nellore, celebrated for exporting its fish delicacies and food specialists to other states, risks losing its reputation as travelers frequenting the area increasingly return home without tasting the iconic dish. Locals attribute the dip in demand and quality to the changing climatic conditions, the presence of invasive species, and the growing pollution in canals and agricultural water sources.
