Andhra Pradesh is gearing up to add a new largest park in the state. The Nagaravanam project in Nellore is nearing completion, having received Rs 3.5 crore as initial funding. With an additional Rs 60 lakh expected to be released in the coming weeks, the urban forest, spread across 125 hectares, is soon to become one of the state's principal green spaces.
The Nellore Nagaravanam, when initially launched in 2017, received a combined total of Rs 3.5 crore from both the Centre and the state government. With the funds allocated, the first 50 hectares of the park have been developed. The area has already been opened to the public and boasts various visitor-friendly and environmentally conscious features like hiking trails, a yoga center, musical fountains, a kids' play area, a canteen, wildlife-themed archways, open gyms, event spaces, and scenic viewpoints. These attributes have made the location a fusion of leisure and wellness destination.
The forest department has collected adult entry fees of Rs 20 and Rs 10 for children since June last year. Photography permissions cost Rs 500, while the rental fees for small event halls are Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 for larger halls per day. The department also rents out spaces for cultural events, birthdays, and other small functions. These activities have allowed the department to make an average monthly income of Rs 3 lakh.
The department aims to increase tourism and revenue by allowing film and video shoots within the park. Environmental activist Dr. R Sreedhar stated that such urban forests are crucial for balancing development and preserving nature. He said they provide recreational opportunities and serve as essential tools for biodiversity preservation and environmental education. The department official plans to finish the entire park in the next three months, after receiving the pending funds.
